Suspect arrested after Thursday standoff

Ronnie J. Wheeler, Jr., was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon just before 4 p.m. Friday. Wheeler is charged with the felony following a standoff with police in the 100 block of Avenue T, Thursday night.

Albert Garcia, chief of police, said the call came in around 5:45 p.m. Thursday as a domestic disturbance.

After two and a half hours of attempting to make contact, Garcia said officers were able to gain entry to the residence with the help of family members. They searched the residence and were unable to locate Wheeler or the victim involved.

Wheeler’s bond had not been set as of 4 p.m. Friday. Garcia said officers were able to execute the felony warrant at an unoccupied residence in the 100 block of Avenue T, Friday, after receiving a tip in regards to Wheeler’s location.

Agencies who assisted the police department with the situation Thursday night included: the Hockley County Sheriff’s Department, Department of Public Safety and the DPS Special Response Team. A DPS helicopter was also dispatched to assist in the search.
