Jury selection will begin Monday in Lubbock in the trial of a Levelland man charged in the February 2016 shooting death of Orestes ‘West’ Garza, also of Levelland.
Pete Garcia Jr., 56, is charged with murder in the Feb. 7, 2016 slaying of Garza outside St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lubbock. The defendant allegedly shot the popular musician as he walked with his girlfriend, Judy Garcia, to a car in the church parking lot. Garcia is the ex-husband of Ms. Garcia.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he later died from multiple gunshot wounds to the back. The gunman fled the scene. Garza was later arrested at a Levelland residence, according to reports.
After the shooting, Ms. Garcia told Lubbock police that her ex-husband had followed her and Garza for months. He allegedly made threats toward the couple and had reportedly assaulted Garza.
The defendant has remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center since the slaying. His bond was set at $1 million.
The trial is being held in the 364th District Court in the Lubbock County Courthouse.
