DPS identifies victims in fatal Hockley, Cochran county crashes

A 21-year-old Anton resident was killed in a fatal accident Friday 4.5 miles southeast of Anton, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Alizah Reyes, 21, of Anton, was pronounced deceased following the one-car rollover that occurred 7 p.m. Friday, January 11.

According to DPS, the vehicle, a 2008 Chevy Cobalt, was traveling southeast on US-84.  There was a dead black cow lying in the roadway, which had been hit minutes earlier by another vehicle, according to reports. The driver, Nathaniel White, 21, of Lubbock, said he saw a shadow in the road and did not have time to evade.

The vehicle struck the cow and rolled into the south ditch of US-84. There were three occupants inside the vehicle including White and Reyes, along with a third occupant, Eric Gutierrez, 22, of Lubbock.

White and Gutierrez were transported to a Lubbock hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. DPS also reported that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts when the accident occurrred.

A second fatal accident occurred around 8:50 p.m. in Cochran County on State Highway 125.

In that accident, Bill Benham, 82, of Bledsoe, was identified as the victim.

According to DPS, a 2015 Chevy Express, driven by Richard Sanchez, 43, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was traveling eastbound on State Highway 125 while the 2013 Ford F-150, driven by Benham, was traveling westbound on Highway 125. Sanchez failed to maintain a single lane and veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with Benham’s vehicle.

Sanchez was transported by EMS with incapacitating injuries.
