The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in Cochran County Wednesday.
DPS identified the suspect who was killed in the shooting as Leonardo Gallegos, Jr., 40 of Muleshoe. Lt. Bryan Witt with DPS said next of kin has been notified.
According to a press release from DPS, around 4:16 p.m. a DPS special agent attempted to stop a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck in Levelland for a traffic violation. The vehicle did not stop and evaded law enforcement with his vehicle, the press release states.
DPS troopers continued to attempt to stop the vehicle by deploying tire deflation systems (spikes). The vehicle was eventually spiked and continued to evade law enforcement into a field northwest of Whiteface. According to the press release, the driver shot at law enforcement and officers returned gunfire. The driver was injured during the shooting and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The press release says these are preliminary findings and the Texas Rangers continue the investigation. The DPS Aircraft Division and the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office assisted during the incident.
Lt. Witt said Gallegos had active warrants at the time of the incident for possession of a controlled substance and failure to register as a sex offender.
