DPS identifies suspect in officer-involved shooting

The Texas Rangers and the Department of Public Safety have released the identity of the subject who was shot in an officer-involved shooting, Saturday, in Levelland.

The man was identified as Samuel Garcia Garzez, 61, of Levelland. Sgt. Johnny Bures with DPS said Garzez is in critical condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

According to Bures, special agents with the criminal investigations division of DPS, were executing a search warrant in the 800 block of Avenue C in Levelland around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Agents were assisted by Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT.

Sgt. Bures said the suspect was the sole occupant inside the home at the time of the search warrant and as SWAT was making entry into the house, the suspect pointed a weapon at one of the SWAT team members. A SWAT member fired at the suspect, striking and injuring him.

The suspect was treated on scene and transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock. The Texas Rangers are conducting an officer involved shooting investigation and DPS special agents are continuing a narcotics investigation related to the search warrant, Sgt. Bures said.

Bures said information regarding the search warrant has not been released as that is still a part of the Texas Rangers’ investigation into the incident.
