Local authorities have given the all clear at Levelland City Hall after it was evacuated Friday after a suspicious package was received.
Capt. Tammie McDonald with the Levelland Police Department said the package had been ordered, “but was different than normal.”
City staff alerted the police around 11:30 a.m. after picking up a package from the post office and opening it at city hall. McDonald said the police department responded and evacuated the building and contacted the Lubbock County Bomb Squad, FBI and ATF.
McDonald said she felt the police department and partnering agencies did a good job responding to the incident and took it “pretty seriously.”
“I feel like our department did very well and we work very well with the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office,” McDonald said. “They always come when we call.”
McDonald said staff will evaluate the response, per usual, and said city hall should be reopened soon.
“I feel we did the best we could with what we had,” McDonald said.
McDonald said staff at city hall received a package that after opening it, appeared suspicious in nature. Staff took precautionary measures in evacuating staff immediately. The Levelland Police Department, fire department, Hockley County Sheriff’s Department and Covenant Levelland EMS responded to the area.
The Lubbock County Bomb Squad, FBI and ATF responded to the location.
McDonald said law enforcement also evacuated area residences and businesses as a precaution.
