Joan Robertson Smith, 89, resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico, passed away Friday, May 7, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents, JM and Dellamae Robertson of Tucumcari, New Mexico; brothers, David E. Robertson of Spokane, Washington and Don Robertson of ;daughters, Della Mae Smith Boley of Cushing, Oklahoma and Kathy Smith Holster of Levelland.
She is survived by daughter, Donna Sue Smith Hinders and husband, Mike, of Los Lunas, New Mexico; son, Robert Smith of Preston, Oklahoma; sons-in-law, Willie Boley of Cushing and Mike Holster of Levelland; brother, Jack Robertson and wife, Sandra, of Seattle, Washington; 12 grandkids and 21 great- grandkids.
Joan was born in House, New Mexico on May 5, 1932.
She graduated from Tucumcari High in 1949. She began her college studies at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
Her college studies were put on pause while she raised her four children.
Joan earned her bachelor’s of art and teaching certificate from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1970. She earned her master’s of art through NMHU in 1976.
Joan taught math at Robertson High School in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and finished her teaching career at her alma mater, NMHU.
She married Don Smith December 22, 1951. They were married 63 years until Don’s death in 2015.
Together they farmed and ranched on properties in and around Las Vegas and on property in Duran, New Mexico.
Don and Joan also owned and operated the Las Vegas Livestock auction for seven years.
She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where she was active in many activities and was involved in many church leadership functions.
Cremation has taken place and burial service will be held at the Duran Cemetery Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m.
Pastor Jesse Boggs will preside over the service and pastor Mike Holster will preside over the music.
In lieu of flower, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Mountain View Dr., Las Vegas, New Mexico, 87701.
