Hockley County Sheriff’s Office searching for suspect from morning incident

The Hockley County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a suspect involved in an incident this morning east of Smyer.

The Hockley County Sheriff’s Office responded to several calls for service early Thursday morning related to a disturbance in the 6800 block of Bearcat Road.

Ray Scifres, Hockley County Sheriff, said the incident began before 3 a.m. Thursday morning and deputies were advised Matthew Neal Smith, 34, had made threats directed at the family at the residence before fleeing the residence.

The sheriff’s office requested assistance from Lubbock County SWAT, which responded and advised it would be safest to wait until sunrise to continue the search for the suspect. Upon daylight, sheriff’s office personnel searched the area extensively and were unable to locate the man.

Multiple agencies conducted surveillance and searches in the area around the residence but Smith was not located.

Smith is described as a white male, 5’11” and approximately 209 lbs. Smith has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a green jacket with fur around the hood and a knit beanie. He also has access to  green and white dirt bike, which the sheriff’s office says he might be riding.

The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information to contact their office by calling (806) 894-3126, or their local law enforcement agency. Callers may remain anonymous.
