Don Gates

Don Gates, 71, of Whiteface, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, December 15, 2021, in Lubbock.
He was born August 19, 1950, in Tucumcari, New Mexico, to Charles Gates and Burtie New Gates.
He was raised in San Jon, New Mexico, where he made many cherished memories with his brothers and sisters.
Don loved the outdoors and especially loved riding horses.
He graduated from San Jon High School and went on to serve his country as a member of the National Guard.
He later attended South Plains College where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in welding technology.
Don married Carlin Wagley, and together the couple raised two children in Bledsoe.
He was a loving father who enjoyed sharing his children’s interests, including playdays and livestock shows.
Don was a true cowboy who enjoyed the simple things in life. His life’s work was rooted in his passion for country living and sharing his knowledge with others. He worked on and managed many ranches in New Mexico and West Texas.
He was an avid and accomplished team roper who was active in the Professional Team Ropers Association, Senior Team Ropers Association, and Morton Roping Club.
One of his great joys was serving as the Livestock Manager and Rodeo Coach at Girlstown USA.
Don was a mentor and role model for many young people involved in the Cochran County Livestock Show and local rodeo circuit, especially the Morton Youth Rodeo.
He was a 4-H leader and served on the Cochran County Livestock Board and the Whiteface CISD School Board.
Don loved to spend time with his family and his greatest blessing in life was being “Grampy” to his two granddaughters who he adored.
He enjoyed fishing, playing card games, listening to cowboy poetry, and watching classic westerns.
Don is survived by his two children, daughter, Tandy Gates Siemens and son, Brent Gates, both of Whiteface; two granddaughters, Briley Siemens and Brecken Siemens, both of Whiteface; two sisters, Barbara Crane and Roxie Hammer; four brothers: Hershell Gates, James Gates, Ben Gates and Elvin Gates; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Celebration of life services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 20, at Grace Chapel at Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield.
Interment followed with a graveside service at San Jon Cemetery in San Jon, New Mexico, at 3 p.m., MST.
The family received friends Sunday, Dec. 19, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Cochran County Livestock Association, P.O. Box 855 Morton, Texas, 79346, or the Texas Kidney Foundation, 4204 Gardendale #106, San Antonio Texas, 78229, in Don’s honor.
Arrangements are under the personal care of Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield, Texas.
