Funeral services for Jose Juan Ortega, 71, of Sundown, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, at Head Duarte Funeral Home Chapel, with Max McGlasson officiating.
Interment will be held at a later date, under the direction of Head Duarte Funeral Home and staff of Levelland.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m until 9 p.m. Tuesday December 21, at Head Duarte Funeral Home.
He passed away December 16,2021, in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Jose was born August 29, 1950, to Alfredo, Sr. and Valentina Rodriguez Ortega, in Menard.
Shortly after Jose was born, the family moved to the South Plains area.
As an adult, Jose moved to Sundown where he started his family and worked in the Oil fields as a derrick hand and a roustabout for M & Q Oil Company for many years.
His hobbies were watching the Grit Western station with his favorite actor, John Wayne and Top Gun.
Jose enjoyed building nick knacks and fixing things and he also enjoyed showing his grandchildren how to work with tools.
In the evenings, Joe enjoyed sitting in his favorite chair on the sundeck, light up a cigarette, pop a top on a cold one and enjoy watching the sunset.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfredo, Sr. and Valentina Rodriguez Ortega; two sons, Jeremy Ortega and Jacob Sanchez; and a granddaughter, Jazlynn Lovee Ortiz.
Jose is survived by his daughters: Consuelo Rodriguez of Sundown and Natasha Ortega, Janie Sierra and Cynthia Cantu, all three of Lubbock and Lorie Ann Covarrubias of San Antonio;
sons: Joe Ortega of Abilene and Jesse Aguilar and Henry Sierra, both of Lubbock; sisters: Tina Collins of Florida, Betty Lopez of Levelland, Diane Davila of South Carolina, and Angela Ortega, Yolanda Ortega and Lisa Ortega, all three of Lubbock and Rebecca Orona of Presidio; brothers, Mingo Ortega and Tive Mares; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The pallbearers were his grandchildren.

    My thoughts and prayers are with the Ortega family.. Met Jose Juan back in the early 70 and all of his family mother & dad sisters. May the good Lord wrap His hands around his family for strength at this time of sadness 😔 🕊🕊🙏🌹🌺🌼Celia Mata Valderas
