Lawless wins primary JP race, commissioner race will head to run-off

The final election results including ballots from early voting and Election Day have been tallied.  The results show Derek Lawless has been re-elected as the Republican candidate for Justice of the Peace for Precinct No. 5 by more than 100 votes. As no candidate filed for the Democratic race for Justice of the Peace for Precinct No. 5, Lawless will run in the general election in November unopposed.

The race for Hockley County Commissioner for Precinct No. 4 will go to a run-off between the top two candidates, Tommy Clevenger and Greg E. Kelly, as none of the candidates earned more than 50 percent of the vote.

The results are as follows:

Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 5
Derek Lawless: 827 — 51.78 percent
Pam Kiser: 718 — 44.96 percent

Hockley County Commissioner for Precinct No. 4
Tommy Clevenger: 286 — 42.56 percent
Ricky Sherrill: 135 — 20.09 percent
Greg E. Kelley: 214 — 31.85 percent

Republican Party Chair
Joyce Lynne Evans: 681 votes — 28.92 percent
Pat Cowan: 1,258 votes — 53.42 percent

Early voting in the run-off election will take place May 16 through May 20 with the Election Day set  for Tuesday, May 24.
