The City of Levelland has issued a notice of evacuation for residences on the south side of Levelland as a result of a grass fire on the north side of the Levelland Municipal Airport.
According to a message from the Office of Emergency Management for Levelland and Hockley County, “due to grass fire, the mayor, under Texas law, has ordered that people evacuate immediately the following area to protect their health and safety and the health and safety of possible rescuers: south side of Levelland.”
Recommended evacuation routes from the areas at risk include: west or north of the Country Club Golf Course. The emergency management office advises residents to not use their telephones except to report a true emergency.
Residents are encouraged to take essential items, such as prescription medicines, eyeglasses, baby supplies, personal care items, identification cards, checkbook and credit cards, valuable papers and to secure their homes before they depart.
They are also urged to take their pets with them and to take a leash, crate or cage for any animals.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were still on scene battling the grass fire.
