With all phases of the new parking lot project complete, the county hopes community members utilize the space while visiting downtown.
What started in May of 2023, the Hockley County Judge and Commissioners realized the need for additional parking downtown and went to work on finding a solution. After the purchase and demolition of three buildings located on the corner of Austin Street and Ave. H, a parking lot was formed through the use of American Relief Plan Act money which are federal funds dedicated to Hockley County.
By providing parking for the Hockley County employees who work at the Annex building, it will free up parking around the Annex building for people needing to vote or take care of other business.
“This parking lot is for the community and not just for Hockley County employee parking,” said Hockley County Judge, Sharla Baldridge.
While planning the parking lot layout, the group had the idea of providing some beautification by possible adding a mural or some form of artwork along the wall facing the parking lot as it was bare.
“We had a vision for a mural to represent the heart of Hockley County and where we live. We relayed that vision to well-known South Plains muralist, Alfonso Garcia and he brought our vision to life after providing the court with several options,” explained Baldridge. “We decided on the option that we believe represents Hockley County well and will bring pride and joy to the people who live here as well as be a beautiful display for visitors. We are so pleased with how this whole project turned out. We look forward to people enjoying the convenience of more parking and the beautiful mural.”
