Levelland orders next general election, ballot includes two council positions

During Monday’s regular council meeting, the Levelland City Council ordered the next General Election.

This year’s election will be held on May 3. The City of Levelland will have two City Council positions on the ballot: District B and District D.

Any citizen considering running for office can pick up a candidate packet from the office of the City Secretary, which was available beginning January 6.

This packet contains all necessary forms needed to apply as a candidate, as well as information on campaign finance reporting, advertising and information on the City Charter as it relates to City Council Members. The candidate forms supplied in the packet are also available on the Texas Secretary of State and the Texas Ethics Commission websites.

Potential candidates for the position of Council District B and Council District D will be able to submit an application for a place on the ballot starting at 8 a.m. on January 15, 2025. Deadline to apply for a place on the ballot is 5 p.m. on February 14, 2025. Those applications need to be submitted to the City Secretary at Levelland City Hall, 1709 Ave. H.

The Council seats are specific to the district that will be represented. In order to apply for a place on the ballot, potential candidates must provide proof that he or she is a resident of and registered voter in the district being represented. In addition, only those citizens who are registered in the specific district can vote in the election.

Council Members are elected for a two-year term, so voters have an election for City Council in their district every other year. Districts A, C elections are held in even numbered years and Districts B, D are held in odd numbered years. The position of Mayor is up for election every three years.

Resolution 2025-01 was presented to the Council by Corley and ultimately approved by the Council with none opposed. Councilman Max Ledesma was absent from the meeting.

The City of Levelland’s home rule Council-Manager form of government was originally adopted in 1948 and implemented in 1949. The City Council is the policy-making body of the city government, exercising those powers granted by the City Charter, State law, and the State Constitution.

The City Council appoints the City Manager to handle the day-to-day administration of the City and provides the legislative leadership needed to ensure that citizens are provided with quality public services to further the orderly development of the City and to promote the safety and welfare of its residents.

The City Council normally meets on the first and third Monday of each month.
