West Texas measles cases increase

The number of measles cases has risen to 159 in West Texas, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) on Tuesday.

Of those, 22 patients are hospitalized.

Since January, the number of reported measles cases has grown from a handful of cases in Gaines County to cases in eight neighboring counties.

Last week, officials announced an unvaccinated school-aged child died from the disease. As of Tuesday, most of the measles cases – 107 – were centered in Gaines County.

About 80 of the cases reported so far involved patients who were unvaccinated.

Another 74 had a “unknown” vaccine status and five patients had been vaccinated with at least one dose.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also announced on Tuesday that officials are in Texas to help local leaders respond to the outbreak.

Those extra personnel will provide support for one to three weeks.

As of March 4, there are four cases in Dallam County, nine cases in Dawson County, two cases in Ector County, 107 in Gaines County, three cases in Lubbock County, two cases in Lynn County, three cases in Martin County, 22 cases in Terry County, and seven cases in Yoakum County.
