Anton man arrested for discharging weapon, assault

A 52-year-old Anton man was arrested following reports of firing a weapon into a residence and attempting to flee.

On Feb. 14, the Hockley County Sheriff ’s Office responded to a shots-fired call in Anton, where a suspect was allegedly shooting into a residence.

Deputies arrived on scene and were provided with multiple addresses where the incident occurred and while investing the area, heard continued shots being fired.

According to a Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies encountered the suspect, Carlos Buitrago, 52, in the 600 block of Maurer Street at his resident.

Buitrago was instructed multiple times to exit the residence but refused to comply. An investigator attempted to de-escalate the situation and negotiate with the suspect but was met with lethal force.

The Lubbock Police Department, SWAT team and Mobile Command Center, along with the Texas DPS arrived to provide assistance with major resources.

After Buitrago barricaded himself inside his resident with continued commands to exit, the garage door opened and the suspect fled the residence in a vehicle, dangerously evading law enforcement.

Officers eventually applied a precision immobilization technique and brought the vehicle to a stop and Buitrago was placed into custody, and a firearm was located in the vehicle.

Buitrago was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, evading arrest or detention with vehicle and deadly conduct/discharge of a firearm.
