The Levelland News-Press is transitioning its semi-weekly print delivery from newspaper carriers to all-mail, General Manager Kimberley A. Young announced. The change, which is effective on Sept. 10, aims to improve delivery reliability and control rising costs associated with delivery staff.
Subscribers will now receive their copies of the newspaper through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), with delivery on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The decision follows a national trend among newspaper publishers as they face increasing insurance expenses for delivery personnel.
“The primary reason for this change is to ensure our subscribers receive their paper on a consistent and timely basis,” Young said in a statement. “We have seen a significant increase in the costs of insuring our delivery staff, which made this a necessary step.”
The move to mail delivery is not uncommon, as many local and regional newspapers across the country have made similar transitions. The USPS has recently rolled out changes to its service standards to enhance reliability, a development that factored into the News-Press’s decision. The company noted that the shift will also help it keep a focus on its digital offerings, though the print edition will remain a core part of its mission.
“We are confident that this new method will offer a more consistent and predictable experience for our readers” Young added. “Our commitment to providing quality local journalism remains our top priority, and this change allows us to do that in the most sustainable way possible.”
