Bhaka sworn in at city council meeting

The Levelland city council met on June 1 to consider two ordinances, discuss the upcoming year’s calendar and hear updates.

Prior to the business part of the meeting, Tushar Bhakta was sworn in by city secretary Andrea Corley to fill the District B seat after being appointed to the city council. The seat has been vacant since the passing of Max Ledesma. Bhakta was selected after the council solicited letters of interest from residents of District B to fill the vacant seat, with four submitting letters, followed by interviews. There was a short break in the meeting for a welcome reception.

Other recognitions included members of Leadership Levelland and the Levelland Fire Department.

City manager James Fisher directed a discussion concerning Ordinance No. 1116 amending Article 9.500 Zoning Regulations to establish a new comprehensive zoning ordinance and zoning map. The city has held numerous work sessions and three public hearings on the proposed revisions. Fisher said there is still some uncertainty on how the proposed revisions will benefit the community and protect property owners and recommended further review.

City building inspector Eli Colunga presented information for Ordinance No. 1117 concerning mobile food unit and vendor regulations needed to comply with the Texas Department of State Health Services requirements and laws. The purpose of the ordinance would revise the permitting requirements in accordance with Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 437B and the use of property by food vending vehicles and is intended to promote the health, safety and welfare of the public. No action was taken and the item was tabled for further review.

A short discussion was held concerning the city council calendar for orientation, training and budget work sessions and upcoming meetings.

Fisher presented staff and project updates and items of community interest.

The council convened into executive session.
