City of Morton announces special election set May 3

The City of Morton will be having a Special Election May 3, 2025 related to the local Municipal Sales and Use Tax, specifically whether to increase the Municipal Sales and Use Tax to be used for General Lawful Government Purposes from one percent (1%) to one and one-half percent (1.5%).

The City of Morton has previously adopted a local municipal sales and use tax at a rate of 1% to be used for any lawful general government purposes.

The Frontier Projects Economic Development Corporation has previously adopted a Type B economic development sales and use tax of .5% to undertake authorized projects for the purposes of economic development.

The combined rate of all local sales and use taxes imposed by the City and other political subdivisions of the State of Texas having territory in the City may not exceed 2% within the City. The total sales use tax rate within the City is currently 1.5%.

The Council has ordered a special election for the purpose of submitting a proposition to the registered voters of the City of Morton. The proposition asks the voters to decided whether to increase the municipal sales and use tax rate for any lawful general governmental purposes from 1% to 1.5%.

The proceeds of the municipal sales and use tax for general government purposes are placed in the City’s General Fund and pay for services that include police, fire, parks, libraries, animal services and certain infrastructure improvements.

The special election shall be held between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 3, 2025, at the Cochran County Activity Building located at 200 West Taylor Avenue in Morton.

Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted each weekday at the Cochran County Elections Administrator Office, County Activity Building, located at 200-A West Taylor Avenue in Morton. Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, April 22 and end Tuesday, April 29.

Applications for ballot by mail shall be requested from and mailed to: Cheryl Butler, Elections Administrator, 200-A West Taylor Ave., Morton, Texas 79346. Applications for ballot by mail must be received no later than the close of business on Tuesday, April 22.
