Covenant Children’s constructing new small baby NICU enhancing patient care

LUBBOCK, TX- Covenant Children's has announced the construction of a specialized Small Baby Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) dedicated to the care of premature infants born before 32 weeks gestation.

This state-of-the-art facility, designed with both cutting-edge technology and parental needs in mind, will add nine new beds specifically tailored for the unique requirements of these infants.

As the region’s only licensed, free-standing children’s hospital, Covenant Children's has always provided exceptional care for premature infants, the new Small Baby NICU offers a dedicated space that enhances our ability to deliver specialized treatment in a controlled environment.

This facility will allow their medical team to respond more swiftly to the needs of our smallest patients, thanks to: Lower Lighting and Noise Levels: Creating a tranquil environment that reduces stress and promotes healing.

Less Guest Foot Traffic: Minimizing disturbances and providing a calm atmosphere for sensitive newborns.

Enhanced Infection Control: Implementing strict protocols to safeguard against infections and ensure the health and safety of our patients.

Covenant Children’s serves more than 500 patients in our NICU annually. The establishment of the Small Baby NICU will free up capacity in their regular NICU, allowing them to accommodate and provide care for more babies in need.

The addition of these nine beds brings the total number of NICU beds to more than 50. Covenant Children's Hospital remains committed to advancing neonatal care and supporting families through every step of their journey.

Construction on the new Small Baby NICU is underway and is expected to be operational by January 2026.
