Immunizations required for band, sports physicals

As activity and sports physicals as well as some registrations begin for the 2026-27 school year, it is important to remember that Texas law requires students from kindergarten through 12th grade to be vaccinated against several diseases, including DTaP, Polio, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis A.

Specific, additional boosters—specifically Tdap and Meningococcal (MCV4)—are required for Seventh grade. Schools may require, but do not mandate, COVID-19 vaccines.

Key Vaccine Requirements by Grade Level Kindergarten– Sixth Grade: DTaP: Five doses (or four if the Fourth was on/ after fourth birthday); Polio: four doses (or three if the third was on/after fourth birthday); MMR: two doses (first on/after first birthday); Varicella (Chickenpox): two doses; Hepatitis B: three doses; Hepatitis A: two doses; Seventh Grade Requirement: Tdap: one booster (within the last five years); Meningococcal (MCV4): 1 dose.

Eight -Twelth Grade: Must maintain all prior vaccinations.

Meningococcal: onetwo doses required (check for booster requirement); M&C Children’s Clinic +two -Parents or guardians may request exemptions for child immunization for three main reasons according to Texas Department of State Health Services including: -Medical reasons: A physician's statement that the vaccine is harmful to the child.

-Reasons of Conscience: Including religious beliefs.

-Military service: Being on active duty.
