Investigation into LCSO shooting death underway

An investigation into the shooting death of a suspect by a Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputy last Friday is underway and the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.

According to investigators, deputies responded to reports of a person with a gun in the 9100 block of Highway 87 just before 11 .m. on Friday. Upon arrival, the suspect, 60- year-old Jose Luis Nunez Morales, reportedly aimed a handgun at deputies.

Texas Department of Safety said that when deputies located Morales, they gave clear orders for him to keep his hands up, which he disregarded, and then reached to his right side and produced a handgun, creating an imminent threat. The deputy then shot and wounded Morales.

Investigators said LCSO deputies rendered aid to Morales until EMS arrived and transported him to UMC with lifethreatening injuries, where he later died.

Investigators said Morales had been drinking at the time of incident.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is leading investigation into the shooting.
