Local candidates head to primary election

Local candidates are gearing up for the Primary Election to be held on March 3, with early voting beginning on Feb. 17 and ending on Feb. 27.

The last day to register to vote is Feb. 2.

For the local county races there was only one filing on the Democratic Ballot. Aaron Gonzalez will be the single candidate for the Democrat County Chair.

On the Republican ballot, the race for County Judge is the only one contested, with incumbent Judge Sharla Baldridge being challenged by Chris Obenhaus.

Judge Anna Dunn Hord (incumbent), who was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott late in 2025, is running for a full term as 286th Judicial District Judge.

Other local Republican races have unchallenged candidates and include Oralie Gutierrez (incumbent) for District Clerk; Jennifer McIntire Palermo for County Clerk; Kelli Brock Martin, County Treasurer; Wendi McNabb (incumbent), Justice of the Peace Pct. No. 1; Mike Richardson, Justice of the Peace, Pct. No. 5; and Pat Cowan (incumbent), County Chair.

In other primary races, Texas voters have an array of candidates on both the Democrat and Republican primary ballots.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R)is seeking a fifth term and faces seven candidates in the Republican primary, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. esley W Hunt. Meanwhile, the Democratic primary has at least three candidates, including U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico.

Gov. Greg Abbott is seeking a fourth term and faces many Republican primary challengers. There are also many candidates in the Democratic primary, including state Rep. Gina Hinojosa.

With Attorney General Paxton stepping down to challenge Cornyn for the U.S. Senate, there are several contenders for his office including U.S. Rep. Chip Roy , state Senators Mayes Middleton and Joan Huffman and Aaron Reitz. In the Democratic primary, state Sen. Nathan Johnson is among the candidates. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is seeking a fourth term and faces three challengers in the primary.

In the Democratic primary, there are three candidates, including state Rep. Vikki Goodwin.

State comptroller Kelly Hancock, a former state senator, became the acting comptroller in 2025 and is running to keep the position. He faces Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick and former state Sen. Don Huffines in the Republican primary. In the Democratic primary, current state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt is among the candidates vying for the party’s nomination.

Texas has 38 congressional seats, and all are up for election this year. Numerous Republican candidates have stepped forward to run in the newly formed districts. Four of the nine seats on the Supreme Court, including chief justice, are up for election in 2026. Justices are elected statewide, and Republicans currently hold all the seats.

All four Republican incumbents up for election face no challengers. In the Democratic primary, two races have more than one candidate.

The nine-member Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has three seats up for election, with one uncontested. Several new candidates are vying for the other seats, which are held by outgoing incumbents. All candidates in the Democratic primary are uncontested.

There are 15 districts within the State Board of Education, with eight district seats up for election, including six currently held by Republicans and two by Democrats. Of those seats, four incumbents are seeking re-election. In the crowded Republican primary, only Julie Pickren faces no challengers.

In the 31-member Texas Senate, only 16 seats are up for election. Two Republican incumbents who are seeking re-election face primary opponents: Bob Hall and Charles Schwertner. In the Democratic primary, only incumbent Judith Zaffirini faces a primary c.hallenger There are 150 members of the Texas House in the Texas Legislature and all seats are up for election in 2026.
