Local clinic encourages mental health care for all ages

As May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, local health professionals are reminding the community that taking care of mental health is just as important as physical health, no matter your age.

At the South Plains Rural Health Clinic, the director of behavioral health Lance Tolbert said mental health plays a role in every stage of life, from childhood through older adulthood.

“It’s important at every stage of what we call lifespan development,” Tolbert said. “For preteens, teens, young adults and older adults, mental health is always something you want to take care of, just like any other part of your body.”

The clinic provides outpatient mental health counseling for patients starting as young as five years old and continuing through adulthood. Services address a wide range of needs, including anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and situational stress.

“One of the nice things about working at a community health center is that we pretty much see everybody,” Tolbert said. “We don’t turn people away based on what they’re dealing with. If someone is appropriate for outpatient counseling, we’re going to try to help.”

Beyond behavioral health services, the clinic also operates as a full-service medical facility, offering primary care, dental services, an on-site pharmacy and lab work, creating a more accessible, all-in-one approach to healthcare for the community.

While no specific events are planned for Mental Health Awareness Month, providers say the focus remains on encouraging people to prioritize their well-being through small, everyday actions.

“Getting outside, getting sunlight, making sure you’re getting enough rest, those things really do impact your mental health,” Tolbert said. “Talking to someone, even just a friend, can go a long way.”

He also emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma often associated with seeking mental health care.

“Seeing a mental health counselor is no different than seeing a doctor for a physical issue,” Tolbert said. “Don’t let stigma keep you from becoming the best version of yourself.”

The clinic is open Monday through Friday, with limited hours on Saturdays, and encourages anyone experiencing stress, anxiety or other concerns to reach out.
