Lubbock Police arrest man for kidnapping

The Lubbock Police Department arrested a man who was impersonating an Uber driver after he kidnapped two women early Saturday morning.

Twenty-year-old Jesse Gonzales was arrested on two charges of kidnapping, one charge of evading arrest, and one charge of reckless driving after kidnapping two women and leading officers on a short police chase.

According to a LPD report, an officer conducting bar checks early Saturday morning observed a vehicle driving recklessly northbound on University Avenue. The driver, later identified as Gonzales, led officers on a brief chase that concluded at the intersection of Marsha Sharp and Avenue V, where the officer initiated a stop.

After making the stop and removing the passengers from the vehicle, Gonzales was arrested. According to court documents, the women said the suspect had convinced them he was an Uber driver that they had requested after stopping to pick them up on Broadway. After entering the car, Gonzales accelerated rapidly, which prompted the police chase.

Gonzales was taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center and was being held on a $111,500 bond.
