Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis, who sought to create a day in recognition of the sacrifices and influence of mothers.
The first official celebration was held at a church service organized by Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday, designating the second Sunday in May for Mother’s Day. The holiday later expanded internationally, though traditions vary by country.
