NFL draft inducts nine Texas Tech players

Texas Tech had nine of its football players inducted through the NFL draft, including star defensive end David Bailey and quarterback Behren Morton.

Texas Tech tied for third place in colleges that had the most players drafted, breaking the previous school record of six, back in 2015. Tech tied with the University of Miami and Clemson, with only one player short of Texas A&M and Alabama, and two short of Ohio State, reported by the NCAA.

In the first round of the draft, David Bailey, star defensive end, was drafted with the second overall pick by the New York Jets. This marked the first time since 1964 a Texas Tech player was drafted with a top five pick.

The second round included two Red Raider draft inductees. The Miami Dolphins drafted linebacker Jacob Rodriguez with the 43rd overall pick, and the Carolina Panthers drafted defensive tackle Lee Hunter with the 49th overall pick.

Two Tech players were drafted in the third round, one being defensive end Romeo Height, who was selected 70th overall by the San Francisco 49ers, and wide receiver Caleb Douglas, who was drafted 75th overall by the Miami Dolphins.

With the 143rd pick in the 5th round of the draft, the Arizona Cardinals selected Wide Receiver Reggie Virgil. Skyler Gill-Howard, defensive tackle, was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round with pick 205 the New England Patriots selected quarterback Behren Morton.

The final Red Raider drafted was safety Cole Wisniewski, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with pick 244.

As Texas Tech continues to strengthen its football program, future Red Raiders could be inducted through the draft at higher rates, and potentially break more records.
