Rooted in the Word...

But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. Psalms 1:2-3

Psalm 1 opens with a clear contrast between the righteous and the wicked. Among the many images in this psalm, the metaphor that speaks most deeply to me is the tree planted by streams of water.

I was born near the foot of a volcano, and one of the great blessings of our area was the abundance of natural water springs. I saw with my own eyes how trees grew strong and healthy beside those streams. You could drink directly from the flowing water—it was cool, refreshing, and unforgettable. Those trees never lacked nourishment because their roots were constantly supplied.

This image perfectly captures the life of a person who delights in the Word of God.

The Hebrew word for delight means more than simple enjoyment. It means to desire, to treasure, to prioritize, and to commit oneself fully. It speaks of aligning one’s will with what is valued most. Isn’t that beautiful? God’s Word is not meant to be an obligation but the highest treasure of our lives.

To delight in the law of the Lord means to dwell in it day and night. It becomes our spiritual food, our living water, sustaining us so that we do not become spiritually dehydrated. When the Word of God nourishes us daily, growth is inevitable.

We are not living in the middle of a desert; we are surrounded by God’s abundant provision, like a jungle full of life. When we abide in the Word of God, we become joyful, fruitful, energized, and firmly directed by His will. But when we neglect it, we slowly drift into compromise, leading to spiritual dryness and destruction.

A tree thrives not because of its surroundings, but because of where its roots are planted. May our roots be deeply planted in the Word of God.

Prayer:

Father God, Thank You for Your Word, which gives life and strength to my soul. Teach me to delight in it—not out of obligation, but out of love. Help me to desire Your truth, meditate on it day and night, and allow it to shape my thoughts and actions. Plant my life firmly in You, so that I may bear fruit in every season and never grow weary.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
