The Sundown ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. Miguel Salazar as the lone finalist to be its next Superintendent starting the 2026-2027 school year.
Dr. Salazar has served as Sundown ISD’s middle school principal for the past five years and was awarded the Texas Middle School Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals and was also named a National Finalist for the NASSP Middle Level Principal of the Year the 2024-2025 school year. His selection as a national finalist places him among the top educational leaders in the country and positions him to represent the state of Texas on the national stage.
Dr. Salazar’s leadership at Sundown Middle School has been marked by a focus on academic excellence, student-centered innovation, and the cultivation of a positive campus culture. His recognition at both the state and national levels reflects his unwavering dedication to public education and to the students and staff of the school.
Dr. Salazar grew up in Sundown and after graduation, went to South Plains College, then on to Texas Tech University where he majored in mathematics and earned his bachelor’s degree and continued his education while teaching and coaching in Ralls for 17 years. He would later transition to his hometown of Sundown and SISD.
This past summer, he earned his Doctorate of Education from Texas Tech. In accordance with state law, the board must wait a minimum of 21 days before officially voting to hire Dr. Salazar as the new superintendent.
The SISD Trustees are scheduled to vote on Jan. 5 to finalize his appointment.
