Seal coat season begins for West Texas

LUBBOCK DISTRICT – More than 307 miles of state roadways are scheduled for preventative maintenance work this summer.

The roads are part of the Lubbock District’s 2025 seal coat program.

“Work is about to begin on TxDOT’s annual road maintenance summer project. Seal coating provides a variety of benefits to the roadway, including a waterproof surface that prevents moisture from entering and weakening the roadbed,” said Ed Goebel P.E., TxDOT Lubbock District Director of Construction. Seal coating also reduces deterioration and cracking of the asphalt surface, which prolongs the life of the pavement.”

Other roadway benefits include an improved non-skid surface in wet or icy conditions and an anti-glare and increased reflective surface for night and wet weather driving, Goebel noted.

Weather permitting, contractors Lipham Asphalt & Paving Co., LLC, of Aspermont, Texas, were scheduled to begin seal coat operations on the $20.6 million project on June 23, to various locations on US 380 in Garza County before moving onto roads in Crosby County and across the district's 17 counties.
