SPC earns award during 2024 Keep Texas Beautiful conference

The Levelland Chamber of Commerce and Keep Levelland Beautiful are proud to announce that South Plains College has been honored with a prestigious award at the 2024 Keep Texas Beautiful conference.

This award recognizes the college’s outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and community engagement, made possible by the dedicated efforts of Keep Levelland Beautiful volunteer, Adrian Mellberg who submitted the nomination.

Dane Dewbre, Chair Elect of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Mary Siders, President of the Chamber, presented the coveted state award to Adrian Mellberg at the South Plains College Board of Regents meeting in Levelland on August 15.

Originally presented virtually in June during the 2024 Keep Texas Beautiful conference, this award celebrates South Plains College’s innovative approach to education and sustainability. In her award-winning application, Mellberg highlighted the college’s outdoor learning center, part of the new Wilburn and Helen Wheeler science building, as a key feature that extends education beyond the classroom.

This center not only serves college students but also welcomes elementary students for campus field trips, providing them with unique educational experiences.

Mellberg noted that one of the most remarkable aspects of South Plains College’s initiatives is its “zoo,” which includes a tortoise named Wilson, two bunnies, and several chickens. These animals are part of the college’s broader mission to enhance learning through handson experiences.

South Plains College’s commitment to “improve student lives” is evident not only in the classroom but also through their efforts to teach volunteerism and practical skills like gardening. These programs help students grow food for themselves and their families, reinforcing the college’s dedication to both student success and community well-being.

Mary Siders emphasized that these successes and recognition for Keep Levelland Beautiful are a direct result of outstanding volunteers like Mellberg.

“It’s a very competitive process on the state level, and we are thrilled that her commitment to the Keep Levelland Beautiful program shined through her work and that of the SPC Science initiatives,” Siders said, applauding Mellberg for this welldeserved recognition. “Her efforts in completing and submitting this application exemplify what can be achieved when a community unites for a greater cause.”
