Three people are dead following a shooting at an Austin bar on March 1.
The shooter, who was among the dead, has been identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne.
Video from bystanders showed the bar in sight with gunfire popping in the direction. There were multiple rounds fired, which killed two and injured 14, with three in critical condition. One of the victims killed was Texas Tech student Ryder Harrington, as well as another student from the University of Texas.
According to reports, Diagne drove around the bar multiple times, stopped his SUV, and began firing a pistol from his car window, after which he exited his vehicle and fired a rifle at people on the patio and streets.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after and shot the still-armed suspect. Investigators are looking into the incident as a potential act of terrorism. Diagne was wearing a hoodie that said, “Property of Allah,” an undershirt with Iranian symbolism, and a Quran found in his vehicle. Police are questioning whether his motives were influenced by the recent attacks between the United States and Iran, although his true motives are unknown. Diagne came to the U.S. in 2000 on a tourist visa from Senegal, a country in Northwest Africa. He later became a permanent resident after marrying an American citizen in 2006. In 2013, he became a legal U.S. citizen. He had previously been arrested for illegal vending in 2001, other undisclosed arrests in New York from 2008-2016, and an arrest in Texas in 2022 for a vehicle collision. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. No further information has been released.
