Wallace Theater reaches new milestone with mural restoration

The Wallace Theater has announce a significant step forward in its restoration journey.

Over the next three weeks, EverGreene Architectural Arts, the leading specialty contractor for historic restoration in North America, will be installing and recreating the theater’s historic murals, marking a major achievement in the ongoing revitalization of this beloved cultural landmark.

Originally adorning the historic auditorium, the murals feature elegant draped curtain motifs along the side walls and a breathtaking acanthus leaf design across the ceiling. EverGreene’s team of expert artisans has meticulously hand-painted the wall murals on canvas in their Brooklyn, NY, studio. These stunning reproductions have been shipped to Levelland and will be carefully installed this week, requiring precise craftsmanship to align seamlessly with the theater’s historic architecture.

“The work of EverGreene Architectural Arts is truly inspiring, and we are grateful for their dedication and attention to detail preserving the beauty and iconic history of our theater” Alycyn Keeling, Executive Director.

Next week, additional artisans will arrive in Levelland to commence the recreation of the ceiling mural. Unlike the wall murals, this piece will be handpainted directly onto the ceiling, ensuring an exact match to the original colors and design. This painstaking process will bring back the grandeur of the Wallace Theater’s historic auditorium, preserving its rich artistic legacy for future generations.

In talking about the Wallace Theater project, Terry Vanderwell, Senior Business Development Executive from EverGreene said, “The smaller theaters that we help restore are often the most rewarding because of the significant impact these projects have on their communities. They have an economic impact that often revitalizes a downtown area, stimulates local businesses and increases the cultural involvement of the area.”

The Wallace Theater has long been a cultural cornerstone of Levelland. This latest restoration project not only revitalizes a historic landmark but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth and community engagement. The renewed beauty of the theater’s murals will enhance the experience for patrons, drawing visitors from across the region and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.

This restoration effort is also an opportunity to educate and inspire the next generation of artists and preservationists. Local schools and community groups will have the chance to engage with the artisans, learning firsthand about the meticulous process of historic restoration and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

The Wallace Theater was built in 1928 by Wallace Blankenship. By 1954, it was part of the largest small-town theater chain in America, with over 30 theaters across West Texas. Serving as the hub of entertainment for decades, the theater holds cherished memories for generations of Levelland residents.

After closing its doors in the 1980s, the Wallace Theater was reestablished as a nonprofit organization in 2015, dedicated to “Creating Experiences that Entertain, Inspire, and Empower.” Through live performances, film screenings, and educational arts programs, The Wallace continues to enrich the cultural fabric of West Texas.

Renovations are set to be completed in April 2025, paving the way for an exciting lineup of events. Patrons can look forward to performances and programming beginning in May, followed by engaging summer camps for young artists. The Wallace Theater’s highly anticipated Grand Re-Opening season will officially commence in September, marking a new chapter in its storied history.

As the Wallace Theater restoration continues, community members are encouraged to support the project in a variety of ways. Donations, sponsorship opportunities, and volunteer efforts are vital to ensuring the success of this historic undertaking. Contributions can be made directly through the Wallace Theater’s website or by attending one of the many upcoming events designed to celebrate the restoration’s progress.

For those who wish to leave their mark on history, sponsorship opportunities are available, including commemorative plaques and recognition in future Wallace Theater programming.

The Wallace invites everyone to be a part of this transformation and ensure that the Wallace Theater remains a beacon of culture and entertainment for generations to come.
