West Texas Mesonet gives rainfall update

Weathermen were again calling for a chance of rainfall this weekend.

It is the third consecutive weekend for chances of rain but the forecasts for this weekend are significantly less intense than predictions for the Labor Day weekend and for last weekend.

Both weekends, actual rainfall measurements across the South Plains varied greatly from a few tenths of an inch to over three inches east of Lubbock.

According to the West Texas Mesonet site south of Levelland, 2.83 inches of moisture was recorded there during the month of August. Over an inch of that rainfall was recorded on Saturday, Aug. 30, while measurements in and east of Levelland were generally six tenths of an inch.

According to the Mesonet site, 12.53 inches of moisture had been recorded year-to- date.

Last year, the Levelland site recorded 17.80 inches. In 2023, the site recorded 14.40 inches and in 2022, it recorded 11.73 inches. In 2021, 17.03 inches were recorded but in 2020, only 7.30 inches were logged.

The Mesonet site at the Mallet Ranch near Sundown recorded 2.33 inches of rain in August for a year-to-date total of 13.57.

Last year, the Sundown site recorded 15.05 inches of rain. In 2023 it recorded 17.44; in 2022, the site recorded 13.36; in 2021, it recorded 17.41 and in 2020, it recorded just 8.16 inches.

The Morton Mesonet site recorded 1.99 inches of rain in August to bring the year-to- date total to 12.36 inches.

Last year, the Morton site recorded 15.09 inches of rain; in 2023, it recorded 12.12 inches; in 2022, it recorded 9.86 inches; in 2021, it recorded 16.86 inches but in 2020, it recorded just 9.11 inches.

The Anton Mesonet site recorded 2.37 inches of rain for a year-to-date total of 19.04 inches.

Last year, the Anton Mesonet site recorded 16 inches; in 2023, it recorded 18.35; in 2022, it recorded 14.28 inches; in 2021, it recorded 16.63 inches and in 2020, it recorded just 7.02 inches.

The Smyer Mesonet site recorded 1.74 inches of rain in August for a year-to-date total of 10.11 inches. Last year, the Smyer site recorded 16.05 inches; in 2023, it recorded 17.50 inches; in 2022, it recorded 11.82 inches; in 2021, it recorded 16.92 inches and in 2020, it recorded just 8.09 inches.

During the first three months of 2025, non of the Hockley or Cochran County Mesonet sites recorded significant rainfall.
