St. Michael 2025 Jamaica set for Oct. 5

Music, food, a car show, volleyball and cornhole tournaments and much more is being planned for the 2025 St. Michael Catholic Church Jamaica set for Sunday, Oct. 5.

Sherman St. across from the Levelland Walmart and will conclude at 8 p.m. with a raffle drawing for a $5,000 gift card and other prizes. The headliner band Arrasando Norte, a popular Norteño band from Hobbs, NM, will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

“This is a celebration of food, music, family and fun” said Norma Rubalcava, event chairperson. “We have lots of activities planned for the day and want to invite everyone to join us. There is no charge to attend, so it is a perfect family outing as we begin the fall season. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the Jamaica.”

The Third Annual St. Michael’s Jamaica Car Show will kick-off at 11 a.m. in the church parking lot on Hwy 114. Car enthusiasts are invited to register for the show from 9:00-10:30 a.m. for $25 per entry. Awards for different categories will be presented at 2 p.m. Live music, concession stand and a kids corner is being planned for the show.

A team volleyball tournament is also being organized with prizes given for the top three teams. Registration is $100 per team with a maximum of eight players. To register, contact Brenda Diaz at (806) 438-7196.

Also scheduled is a doubles cornhole tournament that will get underway at time.

The tournament will be double elimination with best two out of three in the first round. Entry fee is $40 with prizes for first, second and third place finishes. To register, contact Roy Saucedo at (806) 442-1816 or go to the Scoreholio App.

Teams for the volleyball tournament and cornhole tournament may also sign up at 12 p.m. the day of the event. Games begin at 1 p.m.

“We have a great line-up of music for the Jamaica beginning at 12 p.m.,” said Rubalcava. In addition to the music of Arrasando Norte, other musical groups include Day Late Dollar Short, Lewd & Tattooed, Los Petroleros de Odessa, and Hub City Express, all performing from an outdoor stage. “It wouldn’t be a Jamaica without delicious, homemade festival food,” said Rubalcava. “And we have much to choose from.”

Food booths, operated by St. Michael parishioners, will feature homemade traditional items, including gorditas, brisket burritos, fruit cups, tacos al pastor, hamburgers, funnel cakes, tripas, chilindrinas, turkey legs, fajitas and much more.

Raffle tickets for $5 each will be available with a chance to win one of four prizes that include a $5,000 gift card, $2,500 gift card, 11-inch iPad Pro valued at $1,000 and an Embers 4burner gas grill valued at $300.

Participants may also participate in Bingo with prizes and a cake walk in the Activity Hall of the church’s Education Center.

Fr. Jonathan Phillips, pastor of St. Michael Church, said the Jamaica is also a fund-raising activity for the church. “A portion of the proceeds from the Jamaica will be dedicated toward our goal of building of a new Parish Hall,” he said. “We welcome everyone to take part and enjoy all the activities, music, food and fun that our planning committee has worked hard to organize.”
