New cemetery rules approved by city council

Proposed rule changes for the Levelland Cemetery were approved at the recent city council meeting as per recommendations by the Cemetery Advisory Board. The Cemetery Advisory Board met on July 22 to discuss possible minor rule changes and recommendations on flags and a flagpole program, flowers at temporary markers, memorial limits and plots. According to Jim Cole from the Cemetery Advisory Board, the current situation with cremations and caskets in one plot allow one cremation and one casket per plot with a two-memorial limit which was put in place last year. The advisory board recommended adding an additional option which is one cremation and one casket or two cremations with a twomemorial limit staying the same. The advisory board also recommended allowing small flower arrangements at temporary markers that do not hinder maintenance and must be picked up when a permanent memorial is in place or at a cemetery cleanup day which is recommended three times a year, allowing families to have something to place at a temporary marker while awaiting the permanent memorial. The cemetery board considered options which to implement a flagpole program and purchase additional flag poles for the cemetery at a cost of approximately $25,000 or allow stick flags that cannot exceed 8 inches by 12 inches in vases and on headstone bases. The cemetery recommended allowing stick flags and opted not to do the flagpole program due to the cost and budget concerns.
