Levelland Fire Dept. Report

Nov. 11

Fire Department Engine 8 was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the 200 block of W. Hwy 114. Levelland EMS was also dispatched. Upon arrival, patient involved with mva was self-extricated and ambulatory and was with EMS personnel. Fire crew assisted LPD with traffic control until released.

Nov. 13

Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block of McCallon for a report of a possible explosion. Dispatch was canceled en route by Sundown due to a mistaken page and contacted as returning to station. Sundown units were in contact with a Lyntegar crew that working in an alley on a transformer that had blown.

Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Houston and Ave. C for a two-vehicle accident. Firefighters checked on patients and helped one onto a stretcher for EMS and then assisted with traffic control. LPD advised the scene could be cleared and unit returned to station.

Fire Department responded to a location in the 800 block of Hwy 385 for a report of a cotton stripper fire., Upon arriving, LPD advised that the operator thought the fire was out and as he dropped the bale which was smoking and exposed to wind, fire engulfed the bale. The operator requested it be allowed to burn. Firefighters checked the stripper and found no fire inside. Firefighters then clear the sceneAs we were arriving, pd advised the operator thought he got the fire out. He dropped the bale out, which was smoking. When exposed to the wind, fire engulfed the bale. The operator stated that he wanted it to burn. Fire Department then checked the machine, and determined that there was no fire inside the stripper, and the operator was satisfied with the equipment check. The scene was cleared and the unit returned to the station.

Nov. 14

FM 2306 & Cheyenne, Fire Department dispatched to a single vehicle rollover with entrapment. While en route, responders were advised of fluid leaking from the vehicle. Units at the scene and were able to break the window and remove the drive from the vehicle. EMS arrived and checked the patient. Once a wrecker loaded up the vehicle, all unis were cleared from the scene and returned to station.

Fire Department was dispatched to the 700 block of Hickory to assist EMS with gaining access to a residence. Once inside, personnel assisted EMS with the patient and all units cleared the scene and returned to station.

Nov. 15

Fire Department Brushtruck 14 was dispatched to the to the 100 block of Alaska,to a reported cotton module fire. Firefighters arrived to find a single cotton module actively burning with heavy smok and open flame visible. The B-14 one-man crew initiated a direct attack using the master stream deck gun applying a high-volume water stream to suppress the main body of fire. B-14 requested assistance when it became clear the water carried on the apparatus would not be sufficient to extinguish the fire, additional resources from the station were requested. The T-9 water tender was dispatched to provide additional water and manpower. Crews continued applying water until fire conditions were reduced. A volunteer firefighter arrived on scene in a personal vehicle. Brushtruck 14 assigned the volunteer to assist with overhaul operations. The bale was overhauled to expose and extinguish remaining hot spots. Once overhaul was complete and no further hazards were detected, the scene was deemed safe and all units returned to station.

Nov. 16

Fire Department was dispatched to the 700 block of Hickory regarding a grease fire on the stove. Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire had been extinguished prior to arrival. Firefighters checked the stove and there was no damage. Units returned to station.

Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of FM 1490 and Mexico Road for a report of a grass fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found an electrical line that had broken from a pole and arced on the ground, igniting the grass. The fire was contained to less than an acre and was extinguished quickly. Units stood by until LCEC arrived on scene, cut the power, and released firefighters from the scene. Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of FM 1490 and Brazil for a report of a smoking cotton bale. Upon arrival, firefighters located the bale and made contact with the farmer who advised that he wanted it to burn. The bale was moved by a tractor to an isolated spot in the field and allowed to burn. Units returned to station.

Nov. 17

Fire Department responded to the intersection of Wildcat and Ironman to reports of multiple cotton bales on fire. Upon arrival, firefighter found eight cotton bales on fire. Fire department worked to extinguish the flame and any trace of a rekindle. Once the scene was under control, Sundown VFD remained in command and Levelland units cleared the scene. 114 and Alamo Rd, Engine 8 responded to the intersection of Hwy 114 and Alamo Dr. for a MVC. Upon arrival EMS and PD were on scene. There was a two vehicle collision with airbag deployment. Driver of the sedan was in the ambulance and driver of the truck was sitting in her vehicle. Fire Department assisted PD with traffic control, used our apparatus to create a safe working environment and assisted EMS with packaging of the patient from the truck onto the stretcher. We cleared scene after both vehicles were cleared from the roadway.

Fire Department Engine 8 was dispatched to the 300 block of Texas Ave. regarding CO detecting going off in residence. E-8 arrived on scene to single story residence with all the doors open. Firefighters requested the occupant allow them to shut the doors and step outside for a better reading, which was 4-5 ppm of CO around the water heater. EMS was advised to come check out patients. Atmos was about about a gas leak and arrive on scene detecting gas, and cleared the fire department from the scene.

Nov. 18

Fire Department was dispatched to Ave. M and 5th St. regarding a report of a resident seeing large flames in the backyard of a private residence. Upon arrival, crews found a small open burn consisting of copper wiring and insulation materials. The fire was contained to a controlled area and was no threat to any structures. Personnel made contact with the homeowner and confirmed he was attempting to burn the copper wire to remove insulation. The fire was extinguished by homeowner.

The homeowner was then educated on local burn ordinances, specifically that burning copper wire or any similar materials is prohibited within city limits. The resident acknowledged the information and agreed to cease burning activities. No further hazards were found, and the scene was cleared without incident.
