City of Levelland residents and businesses must display approved address identification as per the International Residential Building Code and Fire Code.
The city issued a statement noting that it is critical for fire, police and other emergency response personnel to be able identify both new and existing buildings with address identification and the size and color and proper placement being important to avoid a lengthy search for a location.
The address identification will be legible and placed in a position that is visible from the street or road fronting the property. Address identification characters will be contrasting with their background and numbers will be Arabic or alphabetical letters - not spelled out - with each character a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) high with a minimum stroke width of 1/2 inch (12.7 mm).
If access to the property is via a private road and buildings cannot be viewed from the road, a monument, pole or other approved sign will be used to identify the structure.
In the case of a strip mall, identification could be provided for the backs of buildings that face alleys or roads since the emergency response unit may often be directed to the back entrance.
The address numbers must be maintained in a readily visible condition to provide for continuous identification and would include repainting faded numbers or trimming trees and vegetation that may obscure visibility of the address.
