Griffin takes reins as County Attorney

The Hockley County commissioner’s court appointed Nicole Griffin as the new Hockley County Attorney on Monday who will be filling the shoes of Anna Hord.

Griffin grew up in a little town called Cliff, New Mexico where her dad was a teacher and coach at the school she attended and her mom was a dental hygienist. After graduating high school she attended WEstern New Mexico University in Silver City where she met her husband. After she got married they moved to Florida while she worked on her law degree.

“We knew we wanted to come back closer to home and we knew grandkids were going to be coming and we just wanted to be closer to family,” said Griffin. Griffin then started to apply to law schools where she got accepted into Texas Tech Law school. She and her husband then packed up and moved back home in 2001. Griffin got her degree in 2004 and by that time she had a baby boy and another baby on the way.

“By then we thought we would move even closer to family but I actually got an opportunity to work at the Lubbock district attorney's office,” said Griffin. “So that’s where I started in 2008.”

Griffin prosecuted, filed cases, did misdemeanors, felonies and trial work up until 2014.

“I then had the opportunity to come over to Levelland to the DA’s office and live in Hockley County,” said Griffin.

Griffin worked at the district attorneys for a couple of years and then decided to take a few years off to spend time with her kids.

“That was great. Then I came to the county attorney’s office under Anna and that was fabulous,” said Griffin. “It was a great time. I loved being able to serve as an ADA but also loved being down here as the assistant county attorney and Anna was fabulous to work for.” Griffin worked for Levelland for about four years before she decided to move back to Lubbock in 2021 to the Lubbock district attorney’s office. It wasn’t until Judge Phelan stepped down and Anna Hord got appointed to the bench that she decided to come back to Levelland.

“It was a great opportunity to come back and serve the county that I lived in and work with some of the best people that you’ll ever meet,” said Griffin. “Obviously just a fabulous staff, fabulous officers and great people. I’m super happy to be back.”

Griffin and her husband, Ty, have four amazing sons and she loves seeing them achieve everything they put their hearts to. “It’s a loud and busy house,” said Griffin. “But it’s so fun” Griffin and her family are very involved in the Bethany Baptist church in Lubbock and with their kids' school activities.

“We try to stay super involved with the kids' schools,” said Griffin. “We’ve been involved with the Little Dribblers association here. My dad was a basketball coach for 40 years and so was my grandfather so we love working with the little ones and teaching them the love of the game.”

She also tries to do a lot of volunteer opportunities around the community.

“I would love to plug in and try to find a place to serve at least once a month. A place that needs us and can get some help,” said Griffin. “I’m super excited to jump back into some of those things like with the Salvation Army.”

Griffin is so humble to be able to work under Levelland again and can’t thank her community enough for all the support.

“More than anything I think if anything personifies Hockley County, whether it’s the courthouse, the community or the different towns that surround us it’s the relationships that we form,” said Griffin. “It’s just a unique place and the people and families they love and take care of each other. It’s a true sense of community.”
