St. Michael Catholic Church in Levelland is making final preparations this week for its 41st Annual Sausage Lovers Festival slated for Sunday, Feb. 1 in the Parish Hall at 314 E. Washington St.
The sausage festival features a parish-prepared meal with homemade German-style link sausage and all the trimmings, including dessert and a drink for $15 per plate. The meal will be served as dine-in from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or carry-out from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Eddie Trevino, chairman of this year’s event, said for the past four decades the festival has evolved from a church festival to a community event that attracts sausage lovers from across the South Plains area.
“We are making our final preparations for this year’s Sausage Festival,” said Trevino. “Parishioners will be preparing the German potato salad on Thursday which is always a favorite. On Friday, we will be preparing St. Michael’s famous the German-style link sausage from a revered family recipe. We want to invite everyone to come out and enjoy the festivities on Sunday.”
The menu for the meal includes homemade Germanstyle link sausage, German potato salad, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, fresh rolls, condiments and dessert.
A special event for presales of sausage will be held from 12-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 in the Hwy 114 parking lot of the church behind the Parish Hall. Festivities will include music, sausage wraps and bulk sausage sales. “Here is a chance to sample some of St. Michael’s famous sausage before the dinner on Sunday,” said Trevino.
Parishioners are planning to prepare 3,500 lbs. of German-style link sausage that will be sold in bulk for $8 per pound during the festival. A limited amount of breakfast and jalapeno sausage will also be prepared for sale.
The sausage is prepared using a 100-year-old recipe that belongs to the Kahlich family of Smyer. For more than 20 years, the late Albert Kahlich prepared the seasoning ingredients from his family’s recipe. It has been passed down to his son, Greg, who continues the tradition that has made the sausage prepared by St. Michael parishioners a favorite.
Also available for purchase will be raffle tickets for a 2025 Ford F150 STX 4x4 Crew Cab truck from Levelland Chevrolet and Brownfield Automotive that will be given away at the conclusion of Sunday’s festival.
In addition to the dinner, live and silent auctions will be held in the Parish Hall. Fresh baked goods will be available for purchase. Musical entertainment is being planned prior to the auctions. Raffle tickets are also available at the Parish Office on 319 E. Washington St. and the day of the event.
“We are looking forward to another great festival,” said Trevino, “and we want to thank everyone who has supported and attended this amazing event for the past 40 years.”
