The Levelland City Council met this past Monday for a regular meeting and public hearing.
The public hearing concerned a possible election to combine the current Type 4-A and 4-B Levelland Economic Development Corporation and Economic Community Development Corporation. Several citizens offered comments in favor of merging the two with the idea of enhancing businesses in Levelland.
The council approved Ordinance 1112 to order and establish procedure for May 2 City of Levelland relating to combining the Type 4-A and Type-B. A final reading will be held on Feb. 9 at a special meeting at City Hall.
In other business, the council approved Ordinance 1111 repealing the Construction Advisory & Appeals board on the second reading.
City manager James Fisher and his staff presented the 2025 Levelland Fire Department Salary Study, which indicated the fire department was lagging in some areas as well a study on the fiscal impact for restructuring and increasing compensation. Council members approved both and the LVD is on schedule to see increased salaries beginning March 1.
Fisher also gave an update and said city staff is diligently picking up dead birds that may have passed due to Avian flu and encourages residents to avoid handling any dead birds.
The update also included events and meetings which included the Centennial committee meeting on Feb. 3. The Centennial Parade & Celebration is set for April 11. and the Airport Layout Plan Open House on Feb. 11 hosted by KSA engineers, with the ALP Planning Committee meeting at 2 p.m.
The Keep Levelland Beautiful 2026 Spring Cleanup is set for March 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with city crews placing roll-offs around town on Feb. 20 to March 27.
Projects currently underway in Levelland include the Levelland Airport Lighting Project, with bids opening on March 12 in Austin, and a Municipal Law Seminar by Underwood Law Firm is set for March 31.
