The #14 ranked South Plains College Texans basketball team has been selected to compete in the NJCAA Division 1 National Championship Tournament.
The tournament is set to take place from March 21-28 at Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kansas, and the Texans are glad to be a part of it.
“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to keep our season alive and for the chance to play for a National Championship,” Texans Head Basketball Coach Cinco Boone said. “We have discussed all season how to position ourselves for an at large bid just in case we did not win the Regional Tournament and our guys did a good job of winning NJCAA Division 1 games in the non-conference. Then they did a good job of beating top 25 teams out of our conference. We look forward to competing.”
The Texans were selected as the #12 seed out of 24 possible seeding spots, so it’s safe to say their intentionally built resume spoke for itself.
The tournament bracket includes Howard College, Jones College, Daytona State College, Butler Community College, Snow College, Trinidad State College, Trinity Valley Community College, Monroe University, Mineral Area College, Chipola College, Northen Oklahoma College (NOC-Enid), College of Southern Idaho, Barton Community College, New Mexico Junior College, Midland College, Walters State Community College, South Georgia State College, Indian Hills Community College, Gulf Coast State College, Brunswick Community College, Vincennes University, Northwest Florida State College and Bishop State Community College.
The Texans will face #21-seeded NOC-Enid in the first round of the National Championship Tournament.
“NOC Enid will be a tough test. They beat Howard College, who’s in our conference, in the first game of the season. They are playing extremely hot as they dominated at their Regional Tournament last weekend,” Coach Boone said. “They are a low turnover team that really executes their halfcourt offense and has been shooting the three very well. They also are connected as a unit on defense and have good schemes. We will need to get off to a good start and play our best game in order to earn the right to play another 40 minutes.”
NOC-Enid went 20-13 overall this season and 6-10 in Region II conference play. The Texans matchup with them is set for Sunday night at 5:30 p.m.
