Morris Motor Co. Has New Chrysler’s on Display The 1950 line hit the display at Bob Morris Co. on Houston Street. The Chrysler 1950 New Yorker four-door sedan had restyled longer rear fenders, massive bumpers, new radiator grills, better visibility from the larger rear window, and was powered by the 135-hp Spitfire engine.

Fifteen Candidates Announce Intentions of Seeking Office Political stew begins to boil - The political pot was being stirred in Hockley County. Z.O. Lincoln disqualified himself and resigned as County Democratic chairman immediately after he was appointed county auditor. Deadlines were strict, and the article outlined each deadline date and what was expected of each of them. No opposition for ten races - 15 candidates announced their candidacies for 13 different county and district offices in the Democratic primary elections. County sheriff candidates were Woody Sullivan and Charley Bullock. A.M. (Marshall) Armstrong sought the position of precinct No. 1 as well as Tom Price. Lloyd Croslin did not seek re-election as district attorney. Harper Brown was a candidate for re-election for the office of Clerk of the District Court.

A year of progress for Levelland Two workmen survived a 40-foot fall from Levelland’s newest water tower. A new hotel for Levelland was approved. Bill Henderson, local lightweight, received a knockout blow in the 13th round of a 15-round state championship bout with Eddie Bertolino.

Thirteen Bids Made For Post Office Site - Thirteen bids were made for the location of Levelland’s new post office. Prices on the bids ranged from. $2,000 for one lot and $35,000 for five lots.

Levelland Concert Association Members To See Performance of Operatic Comedy - The Secret of Suzanne was the second-ever concert held in Levelland. Only membership cards of the association were allowed to be honored at the door. Three amazing singing stars were in this production, including Paul Knowles, Andrew Gainey, and Marie Rondahl. New Intercom system installed at City Hall - A new intercommunication system was installed in the city hall, increasing from two to five telephones being used at the city offices. The phone system was equipped with buzzer devices at each phone so that one person could answer the phone, then indicate by pressing a buzzer who was wanted.

Jan. 19, 1950

Four local students lettered at NMWC - Four Levelland students were among 20 men to receive football letters at New Mexico Western College. Those students were Horace Byerley, W.A. Wise, Nelson Peeler, and Gerald Watson.

Small Diphtheria outbreak in Hale County reported - A small epidemic was made known to Hockley County as one person caught the disease. It was the first known case in two years. People were urged to make sure their kids were vaccinated.

Air reserve group plans meeting here - The first meeting of the 9172nd Volunteer Air Reserve Training was held here in Hockley County. It was held in an effort to get a flight going in Levelland.

Jan. 26, 1950

Damage estimates run high as fire sweeps gin interior - A fire burned down the Farmers Co-op gin here in Levelland. It was said it was the worst fire seen since the Furr Food blaze in 1948. 30,000 gallons of water were used to bring down the massive fire.

Vandalism here said worst seen within 42 states - Damage to local meters was the worst, Charles C. Baker reported. At the time, there were 324 that brought in $22,115.67 since their installation in July of 1948. Meters were seen broken from a small hammer all over the county.
