The 2A District 5 Tennis Tournament was held at the Lubbock Tennis Center this past Tuesday and Thursday, and Sundown, Morton, Whiteface and Smyer all left their mark on the meet as each program advanced athletes to Regionals.
For the Smyer Lady Cats, Rylee Riedel and Kaia Brandon won the District Championship in the Girls Doubles, advancing to the Regional Tournament.
For the Sundown Roughnecks, Lincoln Keesler placed as the District Runner- Up and Luis Posadas placed third in the Boys Singles, and Corey Pormanes and Dave Pormanes placed as the District Runners-Up in the Boys Doubles. Keesler and the Pormanes duo will both advance to the Regional Tournament.
For the Sundown Roughettes, Izzy Hoover and Carrigan Dietz placed third in the Girls Doubles. Sundown tennis as a whole finished as the District Runners- Up.
For Morton, Khloe Aguirre and Adrian Luevano placed second in the Mixed Doubles, advancing to the Regional Tournament.
“We played hard. Khloe and Adrian played a hardfought match that took three sets to decide a winner,” Morton Head Tennis Coach Sheroke Meyer said. “The others played hard and showed improvement from the last tournament. I’m proud of their hard work and determination this season. Now it’s time to prepare for Regionals and then fight for a spot at State.”
For Whiteface, Emily Blankenship placed as the District Runner-Up in the Girls Singles, advancing to the Regional Tournament.
All the Regional Qualifiers will compete at the Regional Tournament in Amarillo on April 20-21.
