The Whiteface Antelopes, Ropes Eagles, Smyer Bobcats, Sundown Roughnecks and Morton Indians all competed at the Boys 2A Region 1 Track & Field Championships this past Friday and Saturday at West Texas A&M University, resulting in multiple athletes qualifying for State.
To qualify for the State Championships, the competitor or relay had to place top two in the meet, but third place had a chance based on the marks of the other three regions. Eight quali- fiers come from the top two of each region, and the ninth and final qualifier is the in dividual/relay with the best mark in that event.
Kolter Dockery of Ropes was able to do so in the 100-meter dash, running a 10.95 to become the Regional Champion.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Isaak Soliz (Whiteface) placed as the runner-up with a time of 39.17. Soliz would also place sixth in the high jump with a jump of 6’.
In the shot put, Victor Saenz (Ropes) was the runner- up with a throw of 54’0.50”.
In the 1,600-meter run, Austin Martinez (Smyer) placed third with a time of 4:47.34, and in the 800-meter run, he’d placed sixth with a time of 2:04.54.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Nathan McAdams (Sundown) placed fourth with a time of 15.53 and Cesar Chavez (Whiteface) placed fifth with a time of 15.61.
In the pole vault, Mike Williams (Ropes) placed fifth with a vault of 12', James Rampy (Smyer) placed eighth with a vault of 11’, Cooper Day (Sundown) placed 11th with a vault of 10’-6” and Zayden Pittman (Ropes) placed 15th with a no height.
In the long jump, Ryan Pope (Sundown) placed fourth with a jump of 21’2.25”, Brayden Villarreal (Morton) placed sixth with a jump of 20’-4.50” and Isaiah Acosta (Ropes) placed 12th with a jump of 18’-9”.
In the triple jump, Jose Aleman (Sundown) placed 11th with a jump of 39’2.25”, and in the discus, Kaden Riker (Ropes) placed third with a throw of 155’8”.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the Eagles team of Pittman, Maddux Sierra, Branson Simental and Dockery placed fifth with a time of 42.70.
In the 4x200-meter relay, the Eagles team of Pittman, Sierra, Riker and Dockery placed fourth with a time of 1:29.53.
Following the meet, those who qualified will enjoy a week off from competition before returning at the 2A State Championships from May 14-16 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
