SPC regents hold regular meeting

The South Plains College Board of Regents held their regular May meeting this past Thursday to hear reports, approve resale of property and approve bids.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Robin Satterwhite, president of SPC, presented an award to Mike Box, chairman of the board, to recognize his 40 years of service to the college. Box has served on the board since May 1986 and was elected chairman in May 1994.

As the meeting convened, the vice president of academic affairs, Dr. Ryan Gibbs, presented a report on the SB 37 Curriculum Review Process and curriculum changes. Several curriculum changes will be made in Arts and Sciences in biology, fine arts, kinesiology, math, engineering, computer science, animal science and pre-vet, nursing and other health science programs.

Gibbs also reported on the employee service awards, which included 91 employees with a combined 1,300 years of service for Spring 2026. Six employees are retiring at the end of spring semester with a combined 127 years of service; and 10 retiring employes with a combined 231 years of service at the end of 2025 Fall.

Dr. Stan DeMerritt, vice president for student affairs, updated the regents on the SPC graduation and student awards.

Graduation ceremonies were set for May 8 at SPC Texan Dome, with two sessions at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Three students were set to receive three top awards including Zoey Watson, Vera Sue Spencer Award; Charles Tucker Mathis, Thomas Spencer Sr. Award; and Jeremia Chavez, President’s Student of the Year.

Julie Gerstenberger, vice president for institutional advancement, presented her report on the foundation 2026-2027, as well as the schedule for scholarship presentations by SPC representatives at Anton, Levelland, Ropes, Smyer, Sundown, Whiteface and Whitharral.

Gerstenberger said the proposed 2026-2027 budget for scholarships and educational awards is more than $1.5 million. The 20252026 budget was just over $1.4 million.

Tracy Baten, vice president for business affairs presented the financial report, information on tax collections, and resale of property.

Concerning property tax collection for the October 2025-September 2026 collection year, current collections at $11,857,740 with $37,050 penalty and interest, delinquent collections, $92,909, with $31,284 penalty and interest, for a total collection of $12,018,985.

Baten said there are two resolutions providing for resale of two properties in Anton. Resolutions were approved as were bids from Rocky Perez ($1,500) and L4 Creative Management LLC ($6,200.67) were approved by regents.

Dr. Satterwhite presented his report on legislative and construction updates and received approval on bids for upcoming construction projects.

-Construction projects and approved bids include: -Baker Center Electrical Upgrade at SPC Levelland campus, K-Bar Texas Electric, $55,700; -Stroud Hall Drain Line Replacement at Levelland campus, Lower Plumbing, Heating & Air, $159,154; -Lubbock CTC Parking Lot Repair, Pavecon, $255,611; -Lubbock DTC Parking Lot Repair, Pavecon, $64,149; and Plainview Cosmetology, WR Construction, $51,766.
