Nicholas Chavez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 5, 2023, at the age of 80. He was born on November 28, 1942 in Carrizozo, New Mexico, and later moved to Bledsoe, Texas where he worked as a farmer and a craftsman.
Nicholas had a passion for woodworking and gardening. He enjoyed making birdhouses, figures, chairs and other items for his family and friends. He also loved to tend to his fruit garden and flower beds with his wife, Josie. He was proud of his 1962 Pontiac, which he restored and maintained with care. He liked to take his wife Josie for drives around the Bledsoe countryside and listen to classic rock music.
Nicholas married Josie on October 5, 1968 and they had two children: Barbara and Danny. He was a devoted husband and father who always supported his family and taught them the value of hard work and honesty. He was a Christian man who gave his life to God on New Year’s Day of 1981 and was baptized on Easter Sunday of that year of 1982. He attended the First Baptist Church of Bledsoe and was active in the local ministry.
Nicholas is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josie; his daughter Barbara; his son Danny and his wife Deana; his grandchildren Joshua and his wife Sophie, Matthew, Jeremy, and Sierra; and his 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Julia Lemley, Mary-Lou Chavez, and his brothers John Chavez and Roger Chavez, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Nicholas is preceded in death by his parents Augustine and Juanita Chavez and his brothers Willie, Jerry, and Paul.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Lynwood Nursing Home and Accent Care Hospice for their compassionate care of Nicholas in his final days.
Nicholas will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His final act of kindness was to donate his body to Texas Tech University, where he will help advance medical science and knowledge.
He was a kind, generous, humble, and faithful man who left a legacy of love and generosity.
