Sen. Charles Perry joined Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in announcing his intent to pass legislation banning all consumable hemp products that contain THC in the State of Texas.
“The proliferation of unregulated, high-potency THC products is a growing threat to our communities,” said Senator Perry. “These substances, often far more potent than illegal recreational marijuana, are easily accessible to young Texans, creating an unregulated mess that puts our families and children at risk.”
Earlier this week, Lt. Gov. Patrick announced that this legislation would be given a low bill number to signify its importance stating: “Senate Bill 3, which will be carried by Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, will ban all forms of THC and keep these unsafe products off our streets.”
SB 3 is designed to align with the federal Farm Bill and adhere to existing federal regulations, while taking decisive action to eliminate intoxicating and synthetic THC products from Texas communities. The bill preserves the legality of non-intoxicating consumable hemp products, such as CBD, provided they contain no THC.
Importantly, SB 3 does not impact the state’s current Compassionate Use Program (CUP). Instead, it promotes the use of safe, reliable cannabis products for individuals with serious medical conditions through the regulated CUP framework, overseen by prescribing doctors.
“We must take bold action to keep dangerous drugs away from our communities and out of our schools, and SB 3 is a critical step in protecting Texas families from unregulated and mislabeled intoxicating products,” said Senator Perry. “Under Lt. Governor Patrick’s leadership, we will enact the toughest THC ban in the nation to safeguard the health and safety of our children and communities.”
