MICHAEL WITT

Michael Charles Witt, 82, of Lewisville, TX, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024.

Mike was born in Gallup, New Mexico on October 11, 1942. He was preceded in death by his son, Barton Witt and parents Margrette McQuade Witt and Vaughn Witt of Gallup, New Mexico.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, DeLone McLeod Witt; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Brandon McGary; two grandsons, Beau McGary and Bryce McGary, all of Lewisville, Texas.

Also surviving are 5 siblings Chris Witt from Los Lunas, New Mexico, Vee Witt of Chubback, Idaho, Francie Witt Teal of Farmington, New Mexico, Von Witt of St. Louis, Missouri, and Russell Witt and sister-in-law Lori Witt of Los Lunas, New Mexico. He is also survived by in-laws and nieces and nephews he dearly loved.

Mike graduated from Gallup High School in June of 1960. The day after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, went through the San Diego Marine Corp Base in Barstow California for two years, then served two years at Mount Fugi, Japan, and was honorably discharged as Corporal.

Upon his return, Mike began his radio career by attending the First-Class Radio School in California, gaining his First-Class Engineering License. He worked as a radio announcer at KMOT, Albuquerque, New Mexico before returning to Gallup to spend 20 plus years at KGAK, under the pseudonym Mike McQuade, namesake of his beloved grandfather. During his radio career, he earned AP’s Newscaster of the Year. While in Gallup, he worked tirelessly with Father Dunstan Schmidt with Cathedral Productions. During this time, he promoted major country music artists for the public, where proceeds of these concerts donated back to the Cathedral High School Athletic Department.

After leaving KGAK, he worked for the Southwest Indian Foundation, providing access for the Navajo Nation, by coordinating materials and funding to build bridges. Mike was an active member of the Gallup Lions Club.

Mike and his wife, Delone, and daughter Shannon, moved to Levelland, TX where he worked at KLVT and as the President of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, 1991- 1994. Mike was an active member of the Levelland Lions Club, Rotary and Toastmasters.

In 1995, Mike and DeLone relocated to Mount Pleasant and then Clarksville, TX where he continued his love for radio. In 1997, they moved to Abilene, TX where he work at the Abilene Reporter-News special publication of the Peacemaker, a weekly newspaper dedicated to Dyess Air Force Base, until retirement. Burial at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery is pending.
