Lady Eagles beat Roughettes, 46-42, in back-and-forth battle

The Sundown Roughettes hosted the Ropes Lady Eagles for a district basketball brawl this past Friday, with the Lady Eagles winning 46-42.

The game was a tale of two halves as the Roughettes dominated the first half, tak ing an 11-point lead into halftime, but the Lady Eagles would storm back and dominate in the second half, outscoring Sundown 32-17 to secure the win.

The win improves the Lady Eagles to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in district play, while the loss drops the Roughettes to 11-8 overall and 1-1 in district play.

“I am just beside myself with how we fought back and didn’t go into halftime down on ourselves and give up,” Lady Eagles Head Coach Marianne Wolfe said. “We came out and were in attack mode. We stayed in it, fought back and found a way. I’m just incredibly proud.”

Coach Wolfe also noted the awesome environment that the game had, even if hostile; she gave credit to a great crowd, which was so loud you could hardly hear yourself think.

Though the noise didn’t seem to bother the Ropes trio of Zailyn Wylie, Rylie Lester and Brooklyn Hogg, as they stuffed the stat sheet to secure the win.

Wylie recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds, Lester recorded 12 points, five re bounds and two steals, and Hogg recorded 11 points and five assists.

Following the big win, the Lady Eagles will enjoy Christmas break before returning in the Caprock Classic Tournament on Monday against Alpine at 9 a.m. in the Lubbock Cooper High School main gym.

Their bracket pool includes Abernathy, West, Roosevelt, Hale Center, Quanah, Alpine, Borden County, Brownfield, Iowa Park, West Texas, Reagan County, Slaton, Talkington and Panhandle.

On the Sundown side of things, while it’s a crushing defeat, it’s certainly a learning experience, which is something Roughettes Head Coach Jared Neighbors echoed.

“Right now, we just don’t know how to win big games. We played well, and built a good first half lead, and in - stead of going to finish it, we were just trying to hang on,” Coach Neighbors said.

"The kids fight; I say it every week. But just little things, like our defense, let up in the second half.”

Though they were un- able to finish it off, the Roughettes still put together a commendable performance, powered by several great individual efforts.

Avyian McGlasson, Kathryn Flores and Camry Jourden all scored in double figures, as McGlasson re - corded 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists, Flores recorded 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, and Jourden recorded 10 points, three steals and two assists.

Kyndal Taggart and Kelbie Powell had nice games as well, as Taggart recorded two points, 14 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and an assist, while Powell had four points, nine rebounds and a block.

After the loss, the Roughettes get to enjoy the holiday break before return- ing to action in the Littlefield Wildcat Classic Tournament on Monday at 8:00 a.m. versus the Levelland Loboettes.

Their bracket pool includes Friona, Farwell, Levelland, Olton, Denver City, Elida, Dimmitt, Portales, Dumas, Pecos and Little- field.
